Authentic replicas of the Charles W. Morgan deck prisms.

WHAT IS A DECK PRISM?
A prism that carried daylight below deck.
In the days before electricity, light below a vessel's deck was limited to candles, oil, and kerosene lamps. A clever solution to this light problem was the deck prism.

Laid flush into the upper deck, the 6-sided prism pointing down dispersed sunlight to the cabin below — a safe source of natural light that avoided the open flame so dangerous on a wooden ship.
FROM MARITIME HISTORY TO YOUR HOME
From the deck of the Charles W. Morgan to your shelf.
These are genuine replica deck prisms from the Charles W. Morgan sailing vessel, berthed at Mystic Seaport, CT. During a major restoration (1977–1984), it was discovered that several of the original deck prisms on the ship's deck had been cracked and damaged.

Molds were taken from the original 19th-century deck prisms, and hand-cast replicas were produced to replace them. Those same prisms are still hand-cast here in the United States today — each one arriving in decorative gift packaging.
